Considered the “Gem of Thailand”, Krabi is an affordable, popular beach destination, made up of over 150 islands on the Andaman Sea, in one of the southern provinces of Thailand. Its magnificent coastline spans 150km, covering popular beach cities such as Ao Nang, Railay, Phra Nang and its administrative capital, Krabi Town.
There’s plenty to do in Krabi. Since it’s fairly new to tourism, the area is a bit less developed in terms of amenities, but Krabi still has plenty to offer from beach to beach. From unwinding in an Ao Nang resort, to rock-climbing off the unique limestone rock formations in Railay Beach, to exploring local food and culture in Krabi Town’s night markets, there are endless things to do in this tropical destination.
You can easily hop around the famous islands such as Koh Lanta, Koh Jum and Koh Phi Phi. Take a four-island tour in Krabi covering Koh Gai (a chicken-shaped island), Koh Tup, Koh Mawr and Koh Poda. Krabi is Phuket’s quieter neighbor, and is only a 2.5 hour ride away, by both ferry and bus.
Fun fact: The movie “The Beach” (2000), starring Leonardo DiCaprio, was filmed at Maya Beach in Koh Phi Phi.
Krabi is situated just over 400 miles from Bangkok.

Flights depart daily from both of Bangkok’s airports, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang International Airport (DMK), both headed to Krabi International Airport (KBV).
Thai AirAsia operates from DMK, and is the most affordable and popular airline for direct flights from Bangkok to Krabi. Please bear in mind that checked baggage allowance may not be included in the fare. If you aren’t traveling light, consider flying with Thai Airway as their fares include checked baggage allowance.

Krabi International Airport (KBV) is the only airport serving the Krabi province, and it’s located on the main highway – Route 4, around 9 miles away from both Krabi Town or the Ferry Pier. There are several ways to get to your destination from the airport.
Airport taxis are only available at fixed rates. Pre-payment must be made at the airport taxi booth inside the terminal before looking for your driver. It’ll set you back around THB600 to get to Krabi Town (around 15 – 20 minutes), and a bit more to get to Ao Nang (around 30 minutes). Metered taxis make an occasional sighting, but don’t normally use their meters. They instead charge a flat fare, and are typically only slightly cheaper than the airport taxis.
Taxi fares can be as high as THB3000 when going directly from the airport to the islands. This includes car ferry fees, and it usually takes up to 2 hours to reach your island destination.
The airport’s only official shuttle bus service serves destinations in Ao Nang and Krabi Town. There are no fixed drop-off points. Instead, you’ll have to inform the driver where you’re headed, and they’ll stop you either at the drop-off point, or in close walking distance of the drop-off point. Since routes aren’t fixed, it can mean that your journey time may be longer based on the route of the day.
The airport shuttle service leaves 10 – 12 times daily, between 08:00 – 20:00. Prices range from THB100 (Krabi Town) to THB150 (Ao Nang). Bus tickets are available at various ticket counters at the arrival hall.
Some hotels offer airport pick-up, but note that advance bookings are usually required. Prices for private transfers are usually similar to the airport taxis. Alternatively, you can book and pre-pay for your airport pick-up on Trip.com, where you’ll have a variety of cars and rates to choose from.
Both the international and domestic terminals of Krabi International Airport (KBV) host many international car rental providers. Their booths are located at the arrival hall of the terminals.
The best and least humid time to visit Krabi is between November and March. During these months, you can bask in the sun under cloudless blue skies, as you dip your feet into the crystal-clear sea. Monsoon season occurs outside of this time period.
Thailand’s Lunar New Year, also known as Songkran, is a national holiday celebrated annually from Apr 13 – 15. Famous for its water festival, major streets are closed and used for water fights. If you’re planning your visit from Bangkok to Krabi around Songkran, we highly recommend celebrating the festivities on Ao Nang Beach Road in Ao Nang.
The Laanta-Lanta Festival is held annually in March for 3 days in Lanta Old Town, Koh Lanta. During this time, don’t miss the change to indulge in a variety of delicious food available throughout the 3-day celebration, and experience the traditions and ritual of ancient Sea Gypsies.
Parades and markets flood Krabi Town during the Andaman Sea Festival, marking the beginning of tourist season in Krabi with locals and tourists alike starting mid-November each year.
