Our first visit to the The Three Shires Inn and we would definitely return! We stayed in the "Black Sails" room overlooking the beautiful valley and the first thing I noticed was the attention to detail in the rooms ( room named after a fell, with a picture of that fell in your room as an example ) and in the communal areas. The room itself and the bathroom was spotlessly clean and so were the other areas and you can see why as the team are so attentive. The rooms are of a high quality with high end fixtures and fittings, you can see the owners care about the look and feel of the place. The staff are so friendly, with particular mentions for Gary and Julie. Gary was so helpful, helping us with our luggage up to the room and offering to keep a bottle of wine chilling for us while we were out so we could buy the bottle rather than separate glasses. He was knowledgeable on the beers and whiskeys too, which they have a vast amount in the bar there and we tried a few. We ate breakfast and evening meal one night too and it is really good that Julie explained they automatically book guests for the evening meal and then ask if you want the booking on the day. It saves guests being disappointed and that worked for us. You are also asked at breakfast if you want your room refreshing that day or not, which we felt was a good idea. We really didn't need it doing for a two night stay, so it saved their time and good on the environment not changing towels etc. Julie was very attentive at breakfast and at the dinner so you don't ever feel between Gary and Julie that you will be forgotten. The service is faultless. The food itself was also so impressive and of a very high quality. We commented that the chef was fantastic. The fish of the day and the venison haunch were beautiful and the cranachan and sticky toffee pudding are definitely recommended. We ended the evening in the lounge area, which is very homely and a great selection of Lakeland books to browse. The walks from the Inn are beautiful and we did a circular walk that encompassed Colwith and Skelwith forces with a stop at Cathedral Cave. 6 hours, but lots of stops along the way. With walks like that on your doorstep, you need to return to experience it again!
