The Hotel Next in Funchal on Madeira impresses with its excellent location right on the water. The rooms, although spacious, tend to create a somewhat subdued atmosphere due to their darkness. Nevertheless, the hotel scores with comfortable beds, modern furnishings and attractive bathrooms. Breakfast, served in a canteen style, has a limited selection and the quality could be improved. A highlight, however, is the beach club on the water, which, although without a beach, stands out positively with a pool and direct access to the sea via a jetty.

The hotel is in Lido area with plenty of restaurants and small super markets near by. Only 3 mins walk to bus top where can bring you to City Center €1.95 single one way and airport. €5 single one way, €8 return. Walking to City center is about 20-30mins. Only 10mins walk to Forum Madeira shopping mall. Breakfast is good with many choices of fruit, salad, yogurt, ham, eggs, bread, cereals. Indoor, outdoor pool and gym are nice too. We stay in sea and swimming pool view studio with kitchenette. The balcony is wonderful.
Staffs are polite and patient. Only one con, no air conditioning in 31 degrees. Only have a ceiling fan.

Everything was fantastic, hotel location, services and design of the hotel. I enjoyed the 2 nights there. Unfortunately the welcoming was not good for me as I waited for 3 hours and 20 minutes. Yes I came early before the check in time which is 2 Pm and I came at 11:50 and the front deck staff ( Eduard ) confirm to me that my room will be ready at 2 pm but till 3:10 pm only I got to my room after I esclate my issue to the front deck manager ( Peter ), the problem was not about the time I lost, but the attitude of front deck staff as he is looking to my face multiple times and he didn’t come to say sorry that your room not yet ready just to apologizing…

Only 20 km away from Madeira International Airport, 2 km away from the historical centre of Funchal, and 5 minutes’ walk from the seafront and the Lido swimming complex. Estrelicia is part of the Complex Dorisol along with the Mimosa and Buganvilia Studio Hotel, set on a hillside overlooking the ocean and mountains. And features an outdoor pool, children’s pool, indoor heated pool, jacuzzi, sauna, spa, gym, tennis court, games room, conference facilities, bar and restaurant. The guests can also make use of the amenities of the other hotels that are part of this complex. All rooms are appointed with or without balcony, full private bathroom (shower or bath) with hairdryer, flat screen cable TV, telephone, free Wi-Fi. Paid parking is available. Prior reservation required.

My first impression of the hotel was not at all positive... The door to the room was warped, the window frames were quite dated (on two of the nights of our stay it was windy and the windows made a lot of noise and had little insulation) and the room had no no towels or toilet paper...
After this first impression things got better. Breakfast was good and quite varied. The hotel also has an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, free of charge and towel provided. The hotel offers parking for 7 euros per night, but with some luck we managed to park in a street behind the hotel for free (where it was easy to access the hotel through a back door). Check-in and check-out went smoothly.

Location is great. Housekeeping excellent. Room was clean and comfortable. My bed was comfortable but my husband's bed was not (can feel the springs). The hall carpets very dirty. Lack of staff. Poor customer service at reception. The process was not explained for the pool towels and the parking card. We did not receive pool and parking cards in our envelope. The roof top pool is very nice. No staff there though. No bar men available. It is extremely hot and there's no shade provided. We asked for umbrellas but were told they don't do that in October even though it was mid 30s!! It was too hot to be there without shades!! The neighbouring hotel had umbrellas. With staff attendants always present. The wall plant, at the pool, was knocked over and soil was left on the pool deck. The soil spillage was still there 3 days later. Breakfast is included. It has a lot of variety. Cold foods great (fruit, breads, cakes, cheeses) but hot food was a low rating (eggs tasteless, bacon and pancakes sit too long and are hard),

Unbeatable location in old town Funchal, within easy walk to the cathedral area, harbour, market and cable car station. Good connections with city & island-wide buses too. I had a Superior room with great views, though barking dogs were heard occasionally at night. Breakfast had one of the best fruit buffet spreads I've seen in a hotel and good continental selection. Pool was not crowded though small, rooftop bar was pricey. Front desk reception on arrival seemed a little cold but they proved to be very helpful for the rest of the stay, with restaurant and transport recommendations. In all, a high standard hotel, though hotel prices in Madeira generally are pushing the limits on value.

Stuffy room at the back of the hotel. Noise from street traffic and air conditioning in the shopping center is disturbing. Poolside rooms are better. Poor ventilation in bathroom. Buffet breakfast is ok. Parking in the adjacent public car park is good. However, this is not described anywhere and requires some searching for new guests.

Very atypical hotel which has a magnificent view over the bay of Funchal. A real paradise for me because not too crowded, quiet and easily accessible.

Hotel facilities and equipment, although old, but also basically meet the needs of use, breakfast is very rich, the room given by the front desk should be considered the largest of the same type, but the floor is too low, the parking lot is noisy, the fly in the ointment is less front desk staff Smile, communication is frosty, resort hotels should not be like this. There is also a small episode at check-in. The front desk must ask me to send the order to the hotel's mailbox, and she has my order number in hand. Is it ridiculous!

BBb.88Overall great stay and we'll likely be back next time we visit Madeira.
Great location close to lots of restaurants and bars, and bus stops. It's not too far to walk to the city center and there's lots to see on the way there, too.
The rooms were clean, shampoo etc. was provided and there were even extra blankets which we were very grateful for as it can be chilly at night.
What we did not enjoy that much was the breakfast, as both restaurants serve about the same food and it was the same every morning. The taste was ok but we probably won't add breakfast the next time we stay, or not for all days.
Most of the staff were friendly and helpful, however, the hotel appeared to be understaffed, meaning we'd have to wait quite a bit to receive service, e.g., at the reception, and staff seemed stressed at times.

RRoving08406099628Like another reviewer I became jittery the night before we left about the hotel being part of a shopping mall - silly me! We had such a great week staying here that we want to return next year (and we rarely return anywhere because there are so many new places waiting to be visited)! Everything about the hotel suited us perfectly. Lovely hotel, great staff, fantastic choice and quality at breakfast, quiet even though you're in the town and, as for the roof terrace - all whirlpools should be that big and have those wonderful views! Before I sound as though it was perfect I must confess that putting out the lighting on the first night caused a bit of a problem but we eventually worked out what to do, and we did get used to the low levels of lighting in the room and the lifts. Although we enjoyed cocktails by the pool, we didn't eat in the restaurant or drink in the bar but that was only because there are so many bars, restaurants and cafes within easy reach that it would have been a shame to miss out on some fantastic experiences. We were also there during the flower festival, which gave us beautiful sights and became our regular evening walk being so close to the hotel. Oh, and the icing on the cake - one of our favourite shops, Massimo Dutti, is at the entrance to the mall!

EElia KazakovExcellent big hotel. Many German pensioners. Very good location - on the ocean shore, next to a large shopping center Forum and beach Formoz. By 1 or 2 bus the road to the center of Funshala takes 12 minutes.
Breakfasts are very diverse, but queues for coffee after 8 a.m.. They go on the floor with a stunning view of the ocean, you can sit on the street.
I didn't like the pools - with a beautiful view, but the water is narrow, everywhere on the belt. Only for children. The air conditioner works only for cooling - the room was cold.

MMarian WWe spent a week in a studio apar**ent which had everything you needed for a comfortable stay. The bed was superking and the linen pillows were super comfortable. Cleaning everyday to suit your timescale and every member of staff we encountered was friendly, smiley and very welcoming. All communal areas were kept extremely clean and the whole resort was neat and tidy. Excellent service in bars and restaurants and the food offered was extremely tasty and well presented. Reception and concierges were courteous, knowledgeable and nothing was too much trouble. Thank you everyone for looking after us so well.

GGuest UserHad a lovely relaxing break at this well appointed hotel with stunning views of the ocean. On the whole there are many positives about this hotel. The well appointed rooms with good sized balconies overlooking the pool and ocean. The outside pool area and grounds are beautiful and exceptionally well maintained. Staff are very helpful, friendly and attentive. Whilst the hotel is 40 mins walk into the centre of Funchal, the local bus is really cheap and the stop is outside the hotel. There are also plenty of shops / bars / restaurants within a 5 - 10 min walk from hotel and a lovely promenade walkway to stroll along. Whilst overall this hotel is very good, there are some areas for improvement. Sadly some of these have been pointed out on previous reviews. So I do hope they are addressed as I would love to come back and give an excellent rating! My suggested improvements are #1 The hot buffet breakfast items were rather cold as the hot plates just weren’t keeping them warm enough. #2 It would be nice to have different fruit juices. It was the same choice of 4 every day. #3 The hotel decor requires updating as did our room which had some very worn cheap black furniture. Also, the room and corridor colour schemes are very garish and not very relaxing to look at! Please update with neutral restful colours! #4 The indoor pool is very cold. #5 The sauna door still needs fixing. #6 A proper SPA would benefit with all the ambience and lovely scented smells like the Pestana Carlton.

GGuest UserHotel Quinta Da Penha De Franca is within it's own complex and is up the hill from its sister hotel Quinta Penha de Franca Mar. You can use the facilities within Quinta Penha de Franca Mar as well. Both are linked together by means of a private bridge which goes over the road, this is pretty seamless, but you do have to go out the door of the De Franca and buzz back in, but too much of an issue. Quinta Da Penha De Franca is set within gardens and has a heated pool which can be used, complimentary pool towels provided. You can also use the pool at Franca Mar which is unheated, but was still warm enough, and is salt water, from here you also have direct private access to the sea. Rooms are of a good size, I would recommend staying in the main complex rooms. There are around 4 rooms which are around Rooms 40-44 which are separate from the main complex, that can be nice, but note the Irish Bar is just over the wall, so can be a little noisy at times. Rooms were clean, air conditioning good, TV and mini bar, which if you want to indulge was good value. Beds were big, and very comfy which helped for a good nights sleep. Room Service is also available, though oddly no complimentary tea & coffee provided in the room, which I would expect in a four star. The location is excellent, on the edge of the hotel area means a short walk into town, and short walk to other restaurants and bars in the hotel district so a real positive. Parking is also very good, they have a large free to use carpark, so brilliant if you are planning to hire a car to explore the island like we did, we had no issues parking. Breakfast was also very good, a mix of continental, Portuguese and cooked buffet options. Service was friendly and overall a very enjoyable stay was had.

Another weak point of the soundproofing of the room is the sound of TV, doors in the adjacent room.

RReyho0nThe hotel is in a good location and the sea view room which we reserved had a nice view of ocean. But, I need to mention that this hotel is not a 4 star hotel. The whole building is old and they kept it in an old fashion way. The bath is not good, they don't offer even water in daily service and neither tea. (which is expected from a four star hotel)
The elevator is old and always full, really not suitable for an eleven floor building.
