For our second trip to Caye Caulker, we wanted to try out the north side of the island on the other side of “The Split.” I was a little reluctant as I wondered if being north of the split would hamper our ability to go into town when we wanted/ needed to. We took a chance and are super happy that we chose the Bay Towers. The hotel is a very short walk north from the split. The hotel and surrounded grounds are very well kept, secluded, and for the most part, quiet (especially at night). The only source of any noise came in the form of afternoon music from the Koko King beach club next door. However, we didn’t find it much of a bother as it wasn’t that loud over at the Bay Towers and we were out doing things most afternoons anyway. Our room was very nice and had a small kitchen with basic dishes and supplies. The hotel has a nice dock and the surrounding lagoon area is nice for a swim and even some decent snorkeling if you do a bit of swimming the area to find things on the bottom that attract the marine life (look for the discarded park benches, large storage shelf, and conch shell graveyard for a decent collection of various tropical fish and maybe even a large ray). The grounds have a large sandy “ yard” with a beach volleyball court and plenty of space to do whatever (we used it as an outdoor gym for improvised morning workouts). The hotel also has inner tubes, kayaks, and bicycles that are free to use. The pool is very nice and refreshing. For $7 Belize ($3.50 USD), Rene provided our room with a 5 gallon water jug and dispenser. Also, if you want a little more socializing or a drink or two, just wander next door to the Koko King. As far as getting back and forth across the split, it WAS NOT a problem. The Split to Split ferry runs early morning to late evening ( we used it as late as after 8 pm). It’s a pontoon boat with a friendly operator. Just wave him down from either side of the split. The ride costs $2.50 USD per person. However, we didn’t need to use the ferry much because Rene (Bay Towers owner) offers free boat trips back and forth in the morning, afternoon, and evening. He is also willing to drop you off or pick you up at other times. All we had to do was let him know in advance. We communicated with him via text message and he was always responsive. Speaking of Rene, he and his staff were simply awesome. They have quarters on site and they were always looking for ways to attend to their guest’s needs. It’s hard to think of everything they did, but examples were a small New Years party for the guests with drinks and snacks, frequent rides back and forth across the split, digging out some dumbbell weights when they saw us working out, just sending us messages to check on us when they hadn’t seen us in a while, and arranging a golf cart taxi for us for departure so we didn’t have to lug all of our scuba gear to the ferry. I can’t say enough good things about Rene and his staff, and we will definitely stay at the Bay Towers aga
