Elkhorn Lodge

I would have loved to stay here back in its hay day. Unique and charming location with the river on the property but the rooms are wildly outdated and in need of repairs. The sink in the room leaked profusely. Anytime the water was turned on for brushing teeth, shaving etc, we had to put the garbage can under the drain to catch the steady flow of water. That said, yes, I would stay here again because it is a quirky and enjoyable property.

Rooms are spacious, and the Rio Chama runs very close to the hotel, down behind the property. Don't expect cheap prices in Chama, because there are few decent motels and a lot of tourists who are captive guests. There was no hair dryer in the room, so be sure to pack one. We liked that the Elkhorn is "pet friendly". ~ Why aren't they all?

We stayed in the lodge, first room floor with two double beds; sheets, linens and blankets were clean and comfy. This lodge is a little bit dated, but we felt comfortable, safe, and for Chama, this was one of the few local options available. We took the train during the day, and thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful scenery. The hotel staff were friendly.

Very homely and very cozy fully furnished so perfect the location was beautiful in the mountains of Chama you need to bring your own food to cook. Everything is there for your beckon call seeing the wildlife was so amazing and the staff super friendly

We stayed one night, arriving after dark. We were told to check into a certain cabin, but when we got there the door was open and the room a mess. We were then directed to a different cabin. We paid $172.00 for one night. It was extremely old - probably built in the 1950s with almost no upgrades since then. The area in the corner where the wood burning stove used to vent out through the ceiling was covered with a popcorn tin lid. The mis-matched set of towels were probably 20 years old. The bed was uncomfortable and the temperature in the room difficult to regulate. There was a very old kitchen with a sign saying if we didn't do our own dishes we would be charged $25.00 on our credit card. You couldn't have paid me to use that kitchen. We left early in the morning and decided to shower at our next hotel.

Overall a very nice little mobile home for housing multiple families / groups. We housed 2 couples, 1 single person, and a baby comfortably. The rooms were overall very neat and tidy; there were just a few less-visible areas that could have been cleaned better. The location along the creek is very picturesque and the grounds were well-kept. No noise issues at all - very peaceful.

Very cute cabin. We enjoyed our stay. There was some silverware unorganized in the drawer, but it was not a big deal. Beds were fairly comfortable. The heater worked well once you figure out the thermostat.

We tried most of the other hotels in Durango and now only stay here. The people are great and go out of their way to make us comfortable. Lots of rustic charm which does mean the floors may slope and the cabins have a range and not a microwave but I think that’s great. The bathroom in our cabin has an old 5 panel door with old original hardware. Very cool and I hope they never update it. The bed is very comfortable. The sheets and towels are fluffy clean and nice. Plus they allow dogs and have lots of places to walk them. We will be back!

No customer service. The rooms smelled and it was just a nightmare. My family lasted 10 minutes nd then we had to leave. This was a disappointing end to a lovely vacation. I would not recommend this lodge if you have any type of medical issues.
