The Ship at Dunwich

A super lunch at this characterful, atmospheric pub. Lots of choice of where to sit, including unspoilt traditional pub rooms, pretty courtyard and secluded pub garden. The six of us thoroughly enjoyed the fresh pub food, which brought something new to some pub classics, including great ploughman's with smoked chicken, fresh and tasty crab and traditional fish and chips. The beer was good too! Will certainly eat here again when in Suffolk!

A very brief summary as I am bored writing the same thing to the Ship and parent company, Chestnut Group, with zero response. Saturday, June 15, we (a party of 6) stayed at the Ship. Our bill came to over £1100 for one night, expensive, but OK ish. Food, room, service was just OK, no more. When sitting in the bar, post meal we were advised the bar shut at 10pm, but the web-site states 11pm. Questioned it to no avail. Shame for an annual family gathering who are all post 60 yo, so hardly a wild party. I left a review on their site mentioning this, 10pm in a hotel/inn is early particularly when their web-site says 11pm. No answer. Three further e-mails inc to Chestnut Group complaints, same response, none. Put simply, not acceptable and a poor reflection on The Ship Inn and The Chestnut Group. My complaint is primarily lack of response/communication, but the 10pm closing, if true, is 'unusual', but update the website please.

We had an uneventful stay at the Ship in Dunwich, but 3 days after we checked out I had an unauthorised debit from my credit card. I subsequently received an email saying it was for the lost key. We did NOT lose a key, which I am sure the lady who checked us out was aware of as we handed her the key on check out. The manager Tabatha eventually rang me after several requests via email and said it was because we were the last people to stay in the room and a the bar manager had lied about calling us !! I did get the money back , not on the card it was taken from, even though I received a slightly irritated email with a screenshot of a refund to this card from the Chestnut customer service department,but to my debit card Which I used for the room payment .What I am most upset about is the attitude I have received, absolutely no apology regarding this illegal transaction or offer of compensation. I would be careful staying at any Chestnut Group property, check what you are charged for even after departure!

We stayed for two nights at the Ship. The rooms were great and good value. The food and drinks in the restaurant were excellent, I’d recommend the Ships Ploughmans. Perfect location to explore the Suffolk coast and learn about the interesting history of Dunwich.

Friend and I booked a table several days ahead, we entered the pub to be told all tables in main pub full and we were shown to an empty side dining room. No atmosphere at all We ordered small fish and chips and a gin and tonic each. We also requested a glass of water each The food was delicious, so very happy with that, drinks good too. Though we never did get the water and couldn't get anyone's attention to ask for it I used the toilet, and the toilet seat wasn't fixed on properly We left and were given a bill for £47! It's an expensive area I know, but I've not paid that much in London I have emailed querying whether that might have been an error Staff polite, kind and doing their best, food and general service good, but overall a little disappointing

funny how you get the feeling sometimes not all appears sincere but you give second sight a chance and think may be a review you wrote a while back may of been in haste I am not so sure but we did get back in touch with the Ship , not for a hand out but a polite conversation re my wifes Birthday night out . sadly I think my initial thoughts were spot on and i got no response after calling the Manager and speaking with the deputy Manager who assured me he would call me back . we are not tourist we live in Bungay and also appreciate nice places nice atmosphere and good food . do i regret the drive down to Dunwich " NO did we have a nice night out ! Not realy would we visit again possibly as i imagine as busy as this place can look im sure on a quiter day we may have had a better experience

Enjoyed our stay very much. The hotel was being redecorated during our trip although this only had a small impact on our stay; a skip was placed in a parking space in the carpark, which is already very small. The breakfast was very enjoyable with lots of choice and it made such a change for the breakfast to be served at the table and not a buffet, very much appreciated . The lady servicing on both days was very friendly, professional and caring . She couldn’t have been more helpful. Our fish and chips for dinner were well cooked and presented beautifully. We look forward to returning .

Excellent stay. We stayed for 2 nights on Easter weekend at a very busy time. Room was clean, warm, cosy. Beer was cold, fresh, food was excellent. Service was fantastic. All staff very helpful. Would highly recommend to anyone who wants a weekend beside the seaside

Food and service excellent - check out the menu before you go as it’s very nice but choice is limited. Our room was basic and tired. Sink cracked, glass shelf chipped and black inside shower. Carpet grubby. I was so excited to stay at the ship but accommodation was a let down.
