This university option was a fantastic choice in Edinburgh when I visited during a major festival in August 2023. All downtown hotels were extremely expensive, but the University of Edinburgh provided an excellent alternative. The room don't have private facilities but they were very close to the room, with several showers and toilets available. The room is very spacious (for a university stay), with a very large desk and great lightening. I appreciate this, when you are combining work and leisure on the same trip. The view was not exceptional, but the window could easily be opened for ventilation. In the room there is a washbasin which was appreciated. The bed was very comfortable. The included breakfast was outstanding with an extensive buffet selection involving hot and cold dishes. The university has a convenience store open to 10pm and several restaurants for evening meals if necessary. I tried a pizza here which also includes a lively bar area. I meet some fellow international travellers here - so good social point. It is about 5 to 10 minute walk to the local bus stop, with services every 10 minutes to downtown area, which takes about 15 mins of travelling time. I also took a bus at 1:00am to explore some downtown nightclub options. I returned on a night bus at 4:00am, which shows this part of town is accessible 24/7 by public transit. About 5 min walk form the university, there are few dining options, but most options are downtown. The university is surrounding my some mountains (or maybe hills) and I asked about the hiking options in the area. It takes about 2 hours to ascend the hill/mountain near the university, according to receptionist. However, when at the top, its appears you can walk across many mountains tops to enjoy the amazing views in many directions. I arrived at the Edinburgh railway station. - The taxi rank is about 500 ms from the station. The taxi ride was about 7 pounds, which is perfectly fine, when you first arrive at new destination. I returned by bus to the station, when you understand the system. On arrival by taxi, you come to the receptionist centre, with several young people working the desks. The receptionist centre is surrounding by historical structure/ buildings that you would associate with a university of this standing. The gardens and pathways from the receptionist centre area are nicely kept and wheel chair assessable. Laundry facilities are available in most buildings. However, just one negative note: On reaching my dorm/building it is necessary to pass the rubbish collection points, with multiple bins and this whole area needs to be attending to: to avoid smelly odours and bad vibes. The bins could easily be hidden with trees and fencing if necessary, Overall, I highly recommend this option, provided you are comfortable in using public transit and sharing your toilet and shower.
