We make an annual trip from Dallas to Maryville, TN with the Harley on a trailer. We've found the drive straight through is just too much, so we need to stop. We've gone the Northern route and stayed at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis. But, it's an easier drive from the Southern route. The challenge is finding a place to stay that isn't too expensive, but is OK. Reading reviews eliminates most places because they are so bad (note: I do have different expectations for a Hotel than a Motel). Gadsen-Attalla didn't have much positive, but landed on the EconoLodge (a Choice property). They had bad reviews, BUT they said that they had renovated rooms. I called before booking and was told that we'd be put into a renovated room. That made me feel a better. We pull in to a rather empty motel. The lady to check in said that we had been assigned a room. At first looked like the room had been renovated. But, closer inspection: looked like our front door had been part of a police raid (big dent and the security bolt broken). The bathroom was dirty, the door wouldn't close (and the doorknob was broken). The remote for the TV barely worked. And the bed: they have metal bases that when you roll over sound like a bass drum was being beat (and the mattresses were really, really hard). Very disappointed that we were told that we were getting a renovated room -- if this was renovated, what are the rooms like that weren't. Only positive about this stay was the ease of parking the truck and trailer.
