Did you know? The Hummingbird Inn is actually named after a passenger train, "The Hummingbird," that ran through the area many years ago? If I didn't tell you, Sandra certainly would have. Sandra and her husband Jeff own and run the Hummingbird like characters out of a fairy tale. Sandra is a bubbly, gracious, and generous host. From the moment my new wife and I arrived, she was caring for us like her own children. Her husband, friendly and hardworking, is more often seen in the background mowing the lawn, painting fences, fixing whatever is broken, and brewing the morning coffee. If you thought you'd sleep in or go to a diner, you'd be missing one of the best parts. 9AM, all guests are invited to Sandra's delicious home cooked breakfast. My wife and I were the only people staying this week, so we felt like royalty. Fresh fruit, fluffy eggs, local meat. Oh, did I mention Sandra accommodated my wife's gluten free diet completely? She made us gluten free muffins, pancakes, cookies, English buns...all so delicious. She even dropped off some extra cookies she made on our porch since no one else was staying this week. This is more than "you get what you pay for." The service was received was priceless. Sandra loves to ask if she can help plan your day. She brings maps and pens along with ideas and experience to help you get the most out of the Goshen area and beyond. You can also just enjoy hearing her many stories about the Inn and her guests over the years. And again, there are so many things to do within a half hour. Lexington has all the restaurant and shops you'd want. Douthat park gives you kayaking, nature walks, and swimming. Breweries, wineries, mountain peaks, valley views...everything is accessible from The Hummingbird. I haven't even spoken about the grounds yet! The Inn itself is beautiful and historic. Each bedroom has a private bathroom. There are multiple common spaces that make you feel as if you stepped into a Jane Austen novel (when is the last time you were in a solarium?). More porches than you could ever need. Flowers, trees, Mill Creek, a gazebo, and the soothing sound train tracks nearby. We opted to stay in the more private cabin, built recently by none other than Jeff Shaffer himself. This was the perfect place for a honeymoon, with a private front and back porch, fire pit area, fully air conditioned if you need it, and an electric fire place if you're chilly. The back porch looks on Mill Creek, and I saw hummingbirds every day. Suffice it to say, we will be going back, so you better book before we do! We loved every minute of it, and you will too. We hear another cabin may be coming, so get out to the Hummingbird!
