„🌸 Originally, I planned to stay at Mount 01 Hotel this week, but since I couldn't book a room in advance, I opted for Backpackers Ten Years instead.
Similar to the Backpackers Ten Years in Chengdu, this one is also split by floors. Guys🚹 are on the second floor, girls🚺 on the third, and the common area is on the fourth floor.
The view from the common area's window is absolutely stunning🍂, a mix of light and shadow, warm and cool tones, and it looks incredibly beautiful under the sunlight. I guess you could say I caught it at the perfect time and place🍀.
The staff are all very enthusiastic, especially the manager🧑💻 – incredibly patient, polite, and highly efficient in communicating with guests. You can really feel their genuine effort to meet customers' needs.
The laundry room has detergent pods, and none of the toilets have squatting pans❗️ 🚽. Instead, they all have toilet seats with toilet paper🧻, and the washbasins in the common area even have hot water.
The front desk offers disposable forks🍴, spoons🥄, gloves🧤, and even chili packets and pickled mustard (which I assume are left by travelers for shared use – a very thoughtful touch).
It's located right in ShanCheng Alley. If you have a suitcase, you'll have to drag it a bit after getting off the subway, but being right next to a scenic area makes it totally worth it. Plus, it's close to Jiefangbei, Hongya Cave, and Chaotianmen, making it an ideal place for out-of-town visitors.
However, the drawbacks are also quite evident:
1️⃣ The common areas still show some dirt and grime, especially noticeable on the sofa covers.
2️⃣ The cleaning frequency isn't high enough. The washbasin in my dorm wasn't cleaned until the morning of the second day after I checked in.
3️⃣ Although there's a pool table, foosball, and an acoustic guitar in the common area, there aren't many people participating, so the atmosphere isn't very lively.
⚠️ The toilets and washrooms are quite small, which is typical for a hostel, but I'm just pointing it out as a reminder.
⚠️ There's a guestbook by the bed (a really nice touch), but the mechanical pencil had no lead, and the mosquito repellent in the room hadn't been refilled or replaced (perhaps I should have proactively contacted the front desk about this, just a thought). Maybe they could put up a helpful notice in the future.
⚠️ The common area operates from 8:00 AM to 1:00 AM, and no noisy activities are allowed after 11:00 PM. The operating hours might be inconvenient for some early-morning travelers.
My roommate this time was an elderly Spanish gentleman🇪🇸👴. The other two, according to him, were Australians (though I didn't see them before I left). The old gentleman drank a few beers🍻 and munched on Cheetos in the dorm, and he snored💤, but at least he smoked outside.
Roommates are a matter of luck, and it's the same in any hostel. I'm just sharing my experience. (Personally, I need noise-canceling headphones to sleep in any hostel.) All hostel front desks provide earplugs.
Overall, the shortcomings are minor and don't overshadow the positives – Backpackers is still a really good hostel. If you're visiting ShanCheng Alley, it's a great place to stop and rest.
The review also includes some photos of ShanCheng Alley.
If all goes to plan, I'll be heading to Mount 01 Hotel next week.
