Fig Tree Camp was quite nice in many ways and the filling and tasty food and attractive and colorful public space were fine. The fact that hot water and electricity are available only on scheduled hours and Wi-Fi only in the public spaces are things to be aware of, but were no problem for us. When we go on journeys such as this, we don’t expect everything to work as it does at home. The room, while fine enough, lacked a few things, but nothing significant – no sealed drinking water, closed head board, desk chair or in-room fan. Not having a sold ceiling would make a desirable ceiling fan more challenging, but they could have come up with another solution. Still, this was not really a problem for us since it wasn’t hot. And with our windows open (with screens) for fresh air, we could enjoy Hippo grunts and moans punctuating the cricket-blanketed silence. The sounds of the African night. And having our bungalow sitting alongside a small, muddy river with hippos and crocodiles lounging and swimming (and guards keeping them away from our shore) gave us far more delight than any minor inconvenience could diminish.
