Spirit of the Maasai Mara will be the lodge I bring my family and friends to for years to come every time I return to the Maasai Mara. As a student researcher with the Mara Siana Conservancy, my research partner and I had the pleasure of staying at Spirit of the Maasai Mara. We met Justin, the owner, who not only made us feel at home immediately but also shared the lodge's rich history and journey to where it is today. After staying at Spirit of the Maasai Mara, I can say Spirit truly sets the standard for ecotourism-based lodges. It is deeply involved in conservation efforts as the lodge actively contributes to the success of the Mara Siana Conservancy. The lodge also practices community-based employment, hiring local staff and sourcing food locally, much of it grown within the lodge itself. The lodge has approximately 20 private rooms. Meaning it is a far more intimate and meaningful experience since it fosters a close-knit atmosphere not only among your own travel companions but also with other fellow travelers and the staff. Unlike the larger, more commercial lodges that dominate the area, Spirit is unique in that it remains to capture the essence of what a true safari should be. From the wonderful hot water bottle that's left in your bed before sleep, to the shukas provided in your room for you to be cozy during the sundowner, to the nearly perfect porch for morning yoga.... I cannot recommend Spirit of the Maasai Mara enough. And overall, the lodge truly embodies the Spirit of the Maasai Mara. Thank you Spirit of the Maasai Mara for an amazing stay and I can't wait to come back!
