We asked the owner to organise transfer from the airport, which is a good tip. The car takes you to the outskirts of the Medina, and a porter guides you to your Riad. if you're in Marrakech for the first time, I strongly recommend this, as there are so few reference points. Once you get over being guided down a dark alley, you're greeted by a simple door, concealing a wonderful, contemporary designed Riad. A simple but beautiful courtyard, and a warm welcome from Noureddine, the manager. The room was delightful, the A/C fully working (it matters here). What you're instantly aware of is the peace and quiet. The roof terrace is rather lovely; simple but spacious. We arrived late, and had pre-organised dinner. What came was just splendid; traditional salads (too many), a fabulous chicken tagine with lemon and olives, and poached pear for dessert. It isn't opened as a restaurant, but it certainly could be: the food is that good. The four nights we had here were just so relaxing, and the manager couldn't be more helpful in organising trips and offering directions. After a couple of days you get the hang of the old town, but it was great to have a starting point so centrally placed. I'm sure there are many lovely places to stay in Marrakech, but I can highly recommend Riad Joya as somewhere to wind down and relax after the madness of the Medina. It really is beautiful. We want to go back...
