Hotel Smeraldo

My wife was followed and yelled at by the very aggressive “maintenance man/part owner” of family run hotel, who became very upset when she politely explained that our air-conditioner was leaking. Given she slipped on the floor in the middle of the night when she got up to go to the bathroom, she still approached the whole issue discreetly and kindly. She let them know right away she was NOT hurt so they would not feel threatened, and their first reaction (by oldest male owner) was to blame us for breaking it! (We never touched unit, It’s a remote control.) Then younger male owner had the audacity to get close to my wife and shout at her that it was not broken. She tried to walk away, but he followed her continuing to yell despite her asking him several times to please stop following her, even telling him he was scaring her (she was literally shaking). She didn’t even ask them to refund our money! We only asked if they could fix it so we didn’t have to change rooms. Hello! My wife fell and could’ve been seriously hurt and STILL we were nice, despite not sleeping all night after this awful disruption, hot room and loud dripping noise! To make matters worse, they then accused her of lying, continued yelling at her and asked us to leave! After being called a liar, she said she had video, and they ALL refused to look at it. This place was empty because word gets around. After reading their mean response to another reviewer and making it sound like that person was difficult, they will likely do it again in response to our post. I assure you we were kind, clean, and expressed gratitude at every chance. After paying our bill, they realize they forgot to charge for our dinner and asked us to come back inside -which we did. at that time my wife said, since we’ve had such a bad experience, and now you’re kicking us out when we don’t have another place to stay, why don’t you do something nice and cover the diner? Instead of saying yes or no, they immediately threatened to call the police! We never ONCE said we would not pay for dinner! (although looking back on it now, I should have insisted on not paying for that one night) Despite not sleeping all night in an unsafe space, and being threatened, we paid ALL bills before leaving, and if they say anything to the contrary, I’ll post the receipt. 😢

WARNING -Don’t stay here! We have NEVER written a bad review, but felt UNSAFE and THREATENED by staff. I was followed and yelled at by very aggressive “maintenance man/part owner” of family run hotel, while other owner sat and watched. (I'm a 5’2 female) I tried to walk away and asked him several times to please stop following me, even told him he was scaring me -I was literally shaking. The entire place was empty, so no one to stop him. All this because the air conditioner leaked all night on our bedroom floor. (Despite shutting it off, it continued to drip) The next day, I KINDLY & DISCREETLY explained I got up to use bathroom in middle of night and slipped on wet floor, said I was NOT hurt (thank God) but obviously upset I got soaking wet and up at 2am cleaning up water. Then room got hot, kept hearing dripping, so no sleep! I ONLY asked if he could try to fix it so we could stay in the same room. His first response was to curtly shame me and say I broke it! (It was a remote controlled unit, I did not break it, nor was I given any special instructions to operate it) Then the aggressive maintenance man/part owner, got in my face repeatedly shouting “nothing wrong with it!” It’s important to note, I was KIND and not threatening in ANY way, so completely shocked that instead of getting kindness in return, they accused me of lying, yelled at me, then asked us to leave! Who does that? Awful, pompous, MEAN people that’s who. After being called a liar (which I don't understand as they sent cleaning woman who could verify), I said I have VIDEO. They ALL refused to look at it. So here are images posted below. Don’t choose this place! No wonder it was empty, word gets around. Seeing their nasty response to another reviewer, they will TRY to say I’m a bad person somehow. Until that moment all I did was express gratitude, so don’t fall for it! We paid ALL bills IN FULL and left shaking… just awful. 😢

We stayed here with friends for 5 nights and it did not disappoint. A family run hotel which is very personable, we absolutely loved it. The views from the rooms and the terrace are increadible and the rooms are very clean and comfortable. It was away from the very busy Positano and we loved not having to deal with the crowds.

We loved our stay at the Hotel Smeraldo. Everyone here was incredibly kind and helpful, providing recommendations for places to eat and activities and how to get around. The property itself is beautiful, and the rooms overlooking the water have gorgeous balconies--the best view we had in 10 days in the Amalfi coast. Would absolutely come back.

This stunning family run hotel has arguably the best sunset views on the Amalfi coast. From the moment we walked in we were greeted with beautiful welcoming smiles! Our room was perfect, great shower, INCREDIBLE view, comfortable bed and super clean. The balcony was huge! And the view from it is truely unforgettable.! Giorgio (sorry if I have spelt this wrong) absolutely make our trip! his hospitality and attention to detail was an absolute pleasure! The views from the restaurant are breathtaking! The food is also outstanding! I would recommend this hotel to anyone!

Absolutely worth every penny. Most beautiful rooms. Also the breakfast out on the patio is amazing.

Rafaelo and Giorgio were so kind and helpful! The staff was very attentive. The view from this hotel was by far the best view we had the entire trip!! The room was very spacious and clean. We would recommend this place to anyone who wants to stay away from the crowd but still close enough to spend the day in positano or almalfi.

Stayed at hotel Smeraldo for 2 days at the end of October. Very nice hotel with a very nice view and large clean rooms. The owners of the hotel are very friendly. I had forgotten some clothes, the owners immediately took the trouble to send my clothes to my home address. The hotel is definitely recommended!

If you are looking for a romantic hotel with incredible view of the azzuri blue ocean from your private balcony this is an obvious choice. The room was clean and very charming in authentic Mediterranean-Italian design. Its spacious, comfortable, and has everything you will need. Their rooftop restaurant probably has the best view in Praiano, both morning and evening (You can even see Positano). The menu has a rich selection of Italian favourites. I can especially recommend the dessert, ‘Babamisu’ (had it every night). Also, the breakfast has everything a typical Italian breakfast is made of. Special thanks to Giorgio for looking our for us. The location is perfectly surrounded by other great, great restaurant choices, close to scooter rental, ATM, and a mini-market. There is access to the ocean through beautiful narrow alleys with lemon trees, colourful flowers, stunning humble architecture, and view points. And we really liked that it was a lot less touristy than Positano, Sorrento, Capri etc. Furthermore, its only 10min away from Positano via car/scooter or a direct bus with the bus stop just 20m from the hotel entrance. Its a 15min walk to the beautiful hike ‘Path of Gods’, and its close to many of the other must see spots and ocean towns such as Amalfi, Ravello, etc. However, what is even better than the amazing hotel is the incredible service we received from Raffaelle, his family, and their staff. They were extremely kind and authentic. Everyone was genuinely eager to serve to ensure we had a pleasant stay - and they were always proactively advising and helping with things such as driver to Naples (we tried finding one too late but Rafaelle helped us), and other good-to-know daily recommendations. The whole experience was so good that we had to take a photo together with the family - and write a genuine review.
