On the plus side, it’s well located and a cheap room rate. We knew we weren’t booking in to the Ritz and as a place to sleep, it couldn’t be too bad - the room had a bed after all! But on entry, we were met by a swarm of flies and housekeeping had no fly killer - so first job was to find a hardware store. Two of the windows had signs saying do not open - mainly because the timber frames were so rotten, they probably would have collapsed. Various detritus from a previous occupant suggested the room hadn’t been properly cleaned and the smeared window glass and carpet stains confirmed that. The room decor was very tired, with peeling wallpaper, damp patches, no main light or switch for the huge ceiling fan. To get to our third floor room required the lift, which is locked from the ground floor - so every time you want to go up to your room, you needed to find a member of staff. The lady who checked us in was friendly but check out was the opposite - no eye contact, no ‘how was your stay’, no ‘thank you’. At breakfast, my wife asked if she could have a tomato with her veggie selection and was told ‘I’m very sorry - we don’t have any’. My full English arrived, complete with……tomato! Beware that Salisbury on a weekend is busy and the street bar opposite was in full swing until gone 0200.
