We had a great experience at the Philipburn hotel from booking to eating. Online booking appeared to show that there were no lunch slots available so I contacted the hotel and explained to the receptionist that I was wanting to book lunch for three. I explained that it was for my wife’s birthday and while she and I were coming from Newcastle, our grandson, who has the same birthday as his grandmother, would be coming from Glasgow. (Selkirk is midway between the two). She told me that she would have a word with the chef when he came in and would get back to me. True to her word, she promptly did so, and told me that she had made a booking for three. I further explained that our grandson’s arrival was to be a surprise. On the day, we were greeted by Adrian the owner, whom I’d told what I’d planned and he went along with the ruse wholeheartedly. He showed us to the restaurant (which I later learned had been opened just for us) to a table for two. My wife suspected nothing untoward. When our grandson arrived, Adrian came to our table to say that some “waif” claiming to know us had turned up and showed our grandson to our table. My wife was temporarily perplexed by Adrian’s behaviour but then overwhelmed with delight when she saw the reason! It was a priceless scenario. We were then shown to a a table for three people where we had a delicious meal, delightfully served by Raymond. Our visit was an all-time best, the food was very enjoyable and of good portions, the cost was great value, the cleanliness of the premises impressive and, for us, paramount was the generosity of spirit of the hotel personnel. Even the Muzak was given a Gaelic flavour. I don’t think I’ve ever had such an enjoyable experience in an hotel. Thank you very much, Philburn Hotel.
