The Fig Tree Shanklin

We booked the Fig Tree for a small family reunion. On arrival we were told there was a private function and we we would be unable to use the bar and lounge. Had we been notified of this on booking we would have chosen somewhere else. Having to go to our rooms before heading out for dinner that evening, we found the tv was not working. It was however replaced quickly. The fan and light in the shower room did not turn off after leaving the bathroom. Having a shower in the ‘wet room’ bathroom, the floor tiles did not slope towards the drain, making the bathroom quite slippery and the whole floor covered with water. The guest toilet downstairs had a waste basket overflowing with paper towels after the party the night before. Our breakfast was nice. The staff were friendly and pleasant. The hotel is nicely decorated. In my view, I thought £180 for 1 night in November was overpriced, especially as we did not have access to the bar and lounge. Would not return.

Suites are a nice size. Hair in shower drain . Breakfast small with undercooked sausage! Amenities unavailable due to private function! No information on said function when booking! Would not recommend and would not return. Shame could be so much better.

We arrived at The Fig Tree on Saturday 12th October only to find that the lift was not working (my husband uses a wheelchair). Obviously we were absolutely gutted and cross that noboby had bothered to let us know beforehand. The staff did what they could to help us. We spent the first night in a tiny room on the first floor, then got moved to a larger room on the first floor. Each morning my husband had to use his crutches to get down 13 stairs for breakfast! Then back up! It was meant to be a restful break! I spent a lot of time carting his wheelchair up and down steps. Fortunately we stayed at a reduced rate, due to the inconvenience.

1 night in executive room on first floor. Side view of next doors pool (rm 7). Good size room, comfortable bed, good bathroom (wet room; not a fan but very accessible, well-appointed and very clean). Lift available usually if can’t manage stairs, but flight wasn’t steep. Lovely ground floor facilities of restaurant and separate bar/seating area. View of the old church towards the cliff top but sea not visible from ground floor. Attentive staff. Had dinner; small menu but excellent presentation, flavour & size. Breakfast equally delicious. Serve yourself drinks, toast, fruit & yoghurt. (Nespresso coffee, Dorset tea). Table served full English. Parking on road at front; up to front door reception (steps or slope) and patio area or in car park at rear. (down steps). Short walk to cliff path, lift and steps. All very clean. Evidently getting their act together after their first season. Will do well, we’re sure.

What a fine stay we had at The Fig Tree, exceptional staff, beautiful and clean rooms. All our little requests were met immediately. Stayed here with a small group from Germany. We loved every minute. The bar has a very relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. We also enjoyed a very fine open mic 🎤 evening. If you are looking for a hotel where you can holiday from the very first minute. This one it is.

Had my birthday weekend celebrating with family and it couldn’t have been better. Everyone at the Fig Tree contributed to making our stay really special so thank you all. I would recommend here to anyone looking for a relaxed break in a superb hotel.
