May 15-16, 2024 From the moment we saw photos of this special place on the internet, we knew we had to stay here! The natural rock onsen baths caught our imagination - and our stay was wonderful beyond expectations! The resort is located in a forested valley is stunning, next to a rushing river. Natural mountain hot spring water is channeled into 7 lovely outdoor onsen baths, as well as ensuite baths. The facility is beautifully designed with gardens and multi-level suites, with each of the levels looking out to the river, with plenty of seating to enjoy the relaxing and lovely views. We were treated with limitless thoughtful hospitality from the moment we arrived, to the moment we left - in fact, one of our group kept commenting ”the y[the staff] must think we're really special!”. The suite was beautifully appointed with tatami mats, traditional Japanese decor, comfortable beds, yukata and slippers are provided along with tabi socks and plenty of clean linens. Our suite had its own private onsen bath encircled by natural stones, and constantly running hot spring water. Such a contrast to water-parched California and even Hawaii where we're from! The outdoor onsens are open all night, for viewing of the starry night sky. The kaiseki dinner was exceptional, with many many delicious small plates, each exquisitely prepared and presented - a petite, freshly caught local fish was skewered as if swimming and roasted in a salt shell. Utterly delicious! In the morning, after a similarly wonderful breakfast, we experienced a mochi-pounding session with the hotel staff and guests joining in - lots of fun - photos were provided! Transportation - It was a challenge figuring out how to get to this place - finally, we had a Japanese-speaking hotel clerk call the resort, and got instructions for the 1-hour bus ride from Takayama bus station to Shinhotaka Onsen / Nakao Kou-gen-guchi. There are buses running every hour! We walked to the resort from the bus stop when we arrived, and a shuttle van to the bus stop was thoughtfully provided by the resort when we left. My partner and I really enjoyed the 2 nights stay here. The hosts were very friendly, even though they cannot speak English very well, they made effort to make the guests feel like home. I did find the water in the private hot springs is too hot to enjoy, but i really like the decoration and the setting of the public bath. Breakfast and dinner were very beautiful and tasty, I particularly like the tofu soup in breakfast.

Wonderful guest house, full of interesting artefacts and traditional Japanese trinkets. Traditional stay with modern amenities. Our family of 4 loved our stay here during April 2024. The owners are very welcoming into their home and they go to a lot of effort to make our stay happy and comfortable. A traditional Japanese Breakfast meal is provided. The food is delicious and plentiful. Sleeping is Japanese style on tatami mats and comfortable futon mattresses. The rooms and beds are warm and cosy, even when it is cold outside. The bathrooms are clean and modern, and the hot bath was a very welcome relief from the days of walking. The location is very convenient with a 1 minute walk to the Miyagawa morning markets and other interesting locations. The house is an easy 15 minute walk to Takayama station. Highly recommend. We loved our stay here!

2nd time using this place, and as usual, been a really pleasant and enjoyable one For the price that you pay for, the location is near the train station, bus terminal and walkable distance to the old town as well. Extremely convenient and efficient place. As usual, staff who was working there were really helpful! And there was this pretty japanese lady, who by the end of our stay went out of her way to assist in sending my snowboard all the way over to hokkaido to my next hotel. Best services ever 🫰 Location was amongst all the best food the city could provide too!

跟日本一般商旅比，空間寬敞，很有懷舊日式風情，相對意味設施較老舊些，但環境頗為乾淨，飯店內也有男、女湯可泡，喜歡泡早湯的朋友可在0930前使用，飯店就在濃飛巴士站後方（步行約2分鐘），退房時，因為活動範圍在平湯周遭，所以飯店很貼心讓我們寄放行李（申し訳ありませんが、私たちは303号室のテナントで、高山行きのバスに乗らなければならないので、カウンターのスタッフが見つからないときは、自分で預けた荷物を持って行き、カウンターにメッセージを残しました、ありがとう!），另外這件飯店是屬於別館，入住時會給一張（每人）本館的泡湯卷，本館位於濃飛巴士站正前方（步行約3分鐘），本館湯池有室內及室外，室外湯池造景優美，泡湯當晚氣溫較低又下著雨，泡湯感覺更為舒爽，下次有機會會再造訪

We really loved the onsen. It’s located in a beautiful setting but you need to take a bit of a drive from Takayama to get there. Each men’s and women’s onsen has 2 baths, one hot one indoors and one cooler one outdoors. We liked both as you can get a nice breeze sitting outside. The bathrooms in each room are a bit dated but it’s clean. The food was exceptional, but come with a big appetite because it’s a lot of food. The staff were very friendly and we enjoyed our stay.

To prawdopodobnie hotel o najlepszym stosunku jakości do ceny w okolicy Hirayu Onsen. Recepcjonistka ma chińskojęzyczną panią, która może pomóc w zapoznaniu gości. Hotel nie jest typowym hotelem onsen, który oferuje dania kuchni kaiseki na śniadania i kolacje, ale ma cztery prywatne łaźnie onsen, które są wygodniejsze niż tradycyjne hotele onsen! Oferuje również przestronne pokoje i cichą atmosferę. Do stacji jest zaledwie trzy minuty spacerem. W holu po drugiej stronie ulicy znajduje się sklep spożywczy, który jest czynny do późna. Możesz również poprosić hotel o pomoc w rezerwacji kolacji w formie bufetu po drugiej stronie ulicy; kosztuje ona tylko 4400 jenów od osoby i będziesz absolutnie zachwycony. Krótko mówiąc, hotel oferuje niezwykle dobry stosunek jakości do ceny.

It's walkable from Hirayu Onsen Bus Terminal. I don't think it's far. Along the way, there are also a couple of public foot baths you can stop by. On Trip.com, only rooms with shared bathrooms seem to be available, but they also have rooms with private bathrooms. I think you'll need to book through their official website if you want that option. The meal included with our room is fairly basic such as tonkatsu or beef curry. However, if you book a room with a private bathroom, you can choose meals like grilled beef or beef sukiyaki instead. The onsen water contains a lot of mineral sediment (I guess that maybe a good thing?) The bathroom facilities, though, are quite old.

Good value hostel in the centre of Takayama, only 5 minutes walking from the train station and Nohi bus stop. Even though there is no staff at the hostel, we met them at the reception at the main hotel nearby and we were explained everything in detail. The hostel is spotless and has all spaces well organized. The showers at the first floor are completely new and are well equipped with so many toiletries available, even safety boxes and skin creams! The kitchen is well equipped too even though we only used the microwave. Our twin room was comfortable, we had clean sheets and towels, heating and hangers. The only downside I can think of are the thin walls, you can hear other guests downstairs too.

This place was absolute amazing! By far our favorite place from our whole trip. The location was absolutely perfect for the Takyama festival. We were literally right there with shops and street vendors 50 yards away and the parades would have been right there as well if they weren't canceled due to rain. The rooms were humble and traditional and really added to the experience. The tea in the room was exceptionally good and the traditional Japanese breakfast they served was also delicious and fun to eat. We didn't even know they had a legitimate hot spring on site, but they did! They are Japanese style baths so be ready for that, but the water was therapeutic and so relaxing. I cant recommend this place enough and I would absolute make it a point to visit Takyama and stay here again for a few days on our next trip to Japan. They were such great kind hosts. And I cant believe the price, what an great value. Do yourself a favor and stay here. I'm not sure why the other bad reviews are here I read some of them and they sound like entitled stupid American tourists so ignore them and stay here.
