A mate and I chose Stannum house for the price, $99 which was slightly cheaper than other hotels in the area and I was attracted to the historic aspect of the building for an overnighter on our motorcycle road trip. It also offered ‘secure’ parking and twin beds, and thankfully upon request an ensuite! We arrived & were greeted at the front door by a friendly staff member who issued us our keylock codes then took us to the ‘Kirk Jen’ room on the first floor next to the communal area. I would say the room provided what it said on the box , i.e. a place to sleep and an ensuite. There was a random mish mash of furniture around the 4 poster and single beds, trying to give the room a historic feel but it honestly looked like it had come from an op shop! The room was also in need of some TLC with wallpaper hanging off the ceiling & gaping cracks in the tiles around the sink! However we found the beds to be comfy and made use of the heated blankets and felt the room provided to our basic needs. The nearby communal area had a microwave, toaster, kettle & communal fridge and access to complimentary tea, coffee and milk. The room price also included a help yourself continental breakfast consisting of cereals, toast and coffee. The dining room had some historic aspects to it, along with random stuff like old teddy bears on a sofa next to the tables! Upon exploring the hotel it appeared to have a good history, and also some rooms while inaccessible appeared set in the original style, as were the hallways. The front balcony seemed a nice spot for evening drinks and a climb up the steep steps to the tower balcony offered a nice rooftop view of the area. The hotel was quiet and close to town with a Coles down the road and the Telegraph Hotel/Pub where we enjoyed dinner. Overall I thought Stannum House was an adequate and interesting but quirky hotel in need of some TLC. I personally would stay here again on a trip with a mate if it offered the best price, but am sure my wife wouldn’t appreciate the quirkiness and what she would call ‘old tat’!! 7.5/10
