Horas Family Home

This was my second visit to Horas Family Home. My first visit was 5 years ago and the experience and feeling were again great. Just relaxing, enjoying the views, walking around Tuktuk and even swimming in Lake Toba. This time we took also the Samosir tour of Horas Family Home exposing us to Batak culture, handicraft and impressive landscapes of the island and surrounding. Perfect logistic organization also, the pick-up from our hotel in Medan and drop-off again 3 days later in Prapat for the continuation of our 3-week trip through Indonesia. There are two beds, one is King sized and the second one consists of two single beds, a midsize dining table with 6 padded chairs, a chest of drawers with a flat TV make the room look quite colorful with yellow painted walls, wooden framed windows, furniture and high, shiny wooden ceilings. Eight windows all around the large room make it look quite bright. A large fridge, gas and rice cooker, blender, microwave including crockery and cutlery and a big water dispenser filled with fresh water make the kitchencorner quite complete. The guests can prepare their own meals, while the vegetarian dishes in the restaurant are also very delicious. The quiet studio has a ceiling fan and and a good stand-alone fan, but an aircon, especially in one of the sleeping areas, could add to the comfort on hot summer days or nights. The configuration and general interior of the room itself make a huge difference to the rather small rooms and limited outfit, facilities and amenities, that most other rooms in Tuk Tuk provide, the bathroom with a hot and cold shower is spacious, cozy and clean, so the place is more a home away from home, where it can also be enjoyable to stay for a longer period of time without missing a certain comfort. One can relax on a large balcony with table chairs and rattan couch, enjoy the view of jungle trees and lake, pick a book from a nice wooden bookshelf hanging on the wall or use WiFi. The twitter and chirping of the birds, that inhabit the higher layers of the roof, sounds like they're enjoying the natural ambience of the whole compound. There's a lot of beautiful flowers 🌺, an organic vegetable garden 🏡 providing herbs and vegetables for delicious vegetarian dishes combined with tofu and tempeh. One can also pick vegetables and herbs from the garden and create all sorts of green smoothies. There's a clean swimmingpool next to a springboard, that invites for a jump into the lake. Boats and bikes for rent are also available. Ferry arrival and departure is just a 2 minute-walk away. Next to the compound one can buy great tasting wild chicken eggs, which make quite a difference with regards to taste and health. There's a local food store, other small stores and a real supermarket in close walking distance. Only a few steps away there are a German bakery and a pizzeria. We enjoyed the quiet and familiar a**osphere. We'd definitely come back, it's been the best place of all we stayed at Lake Toba.

Our stay at Horas was great. We stayed 3 nights but could have easily stayed longer. The location was perfect for exploring and the place was perfect for just doing nothing. The staff were friendly and accommodating. We booked a tour around the island and it was a good experience. Berend was extremely helpful in sharing details about the island, batak culture and onward travel. Highly recommended especially for families with young kids. Lots to occupy the attention of little ones.

We booked 2bedroom type.. we cant really call it hotel. It is a guest house and they really prepare for long stay guests... The area has living room, pantry completed with rice cooker, fridge, water dispenser, a lot of tea bags, coffee, creamer and sugar. They also provide plates, glasses, etc.. The rooms are big and bathroom also very big. Hot shower is available. No aircon needed here... It is cool enough. Lake Toba was just behind the guesthouse. We visited the lake the next morning and enjoy the scenery and it is very peaceful and calming.

We are a family of 4 and travel 2 months in indonesia. We stayed 1 week at Horas. It was a beautiful week! The children enjoyed fishing in the lake, feeding the rabbits, swimming in the lake or go in with the canoe. The host is very friendly, we had excellent breakfast every day, and they cook lovely meals. On our daughter ‘s birthday we went to the market to buy spare ribs, and in the evening they grilled it and we eat it with fresh vegetables from their garden. We hired motorcycles at Horas to discover the island of samosir. We stayed in the Horas mini, very clean and good beds, hot, good shower. We had a fridge and water in the room. Perfect place in family a**osphere at tuk tuk. We recommend it!

Location: in Tuktuk right on lake side, road at back, ferry 100 metres, easy to find. Rooms: big to huge, especially Horas Family Home, but if you want it the driver's rooms are smaller. Views fantastic. Staff, led by Berend, who's Dutch, are extremely helpful and make you feel part of the family - especially the tour of the northern part of the island, ably driven by Robin; and the breakfasts and crayfish dinner - delicious. This is a wonderful place to stay, right on the lakeside. The owners and staff are so warm and welcoming - one of the high points of Horas. The property itself has great vibes, with the beautiful orchids right as you come in. Past the rooms are the fresh vegetable gardens - open for guests to pick and eat! I especially love sitting near the lake and relaxing - there are chairs, tables, and a fire pit. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, perfect for families and larger groups. I highly recommend Horas if you're planning to be in Samosir.

Lovely space to relax in. Clean accommodation with good facilities. Highly recommend the Horas family home, plenty of space to relax in and peaceful. The family are so helpful with any questions you have or things you want to do. We spent nearly a week here relaxing with our family and had a wonderful time!

We stayed 3 nights in horas mini. The rooms were well designed, and very clean. Space is not huge, but in terms of quality price ratio you won't find anything better around it. But as with all places, it's the people that make the difference. Berend and his partner have great suggestions for trips and their cook is excellent. Continental breakfast is really good too. All in all, we can warmly recommend Horas!
