Yuksum is the 1st capital of Sikkim and is the gateway to the Goechala Trekking Point through the Kanchenjunga National Park. We reached Yuksum. A small habitat with number of home stays, some shops, hotels and restaurants and a small health centre. This is the place preferred by trekkers for Kanchenjunga base camp than regular tourists. There are some trekking cos. Who make arrangements for trekking against some cost. Our stay was in Limboo homestay. We have been provided with a cottage amidst a beautiful garden, full with different cactus and succulents. Rooms are clean and comfortable with amenities and with attached bath with geyser. It is attached with an attic, which you can climb to by a wooden ladder from inside the room. This is meant for birdwatching or meditation. Normally they provide breakfast and dinner. The Food is mostly Veg but they serve Egg. Lunch and snacks are also available against advance order. And extra payment. The Homestay is located well near the market just in front of the Health Centre. There is a Monastery just round the corner and a lake nearby. You can also find some good resorts near the homestay which are quite reasonably priced. Mr Limboo the homestay owner and his children are very good hosts and catered to all our needs. He and his wife showed us around his farm and introduced us to so many kind of herbs which they told were useful for treatment of ailments. BUT…BE AAWARE of LEECHES…specially during the rains…they are found in abundance and suck the blood out of you…As we were not aware and roamed around we also were attacked by the leeches… The leeches also attach themselves to the dogs in the campus and were also spread by them when the dogs came and rested on the doorsteps…It seems Hand Sanitisers were a good method of killing the Leeches…so please carry a bottle of it when you visit Sikkim in the rains.
