Impossible Motel

Impossible Motel, lives up to it's name, Impossible to get a good night's sleep, also Toilet and Shower are only part divided in the room, just a screen to separate from the room so very little privacy. We booked in for 2 nights in room 3, the Post Room, down in the basement. When you wash your hands after you have used the toilet, you need to walk around the bed to get shower gel from the shower. Even though the walls and ceiling were brick they do not dampen the sound as we found out by the amorous couple nearby, we could hear everything and I mean everything, even when they were chatting once they had finished - even the supplied earplugs did not completely stop the sound! We complained next day at the reception and she did apologise and said we could have called the night porter, but at 3am? Maybe we should have? So we cancelled our next day and went home even though they offered another room (we'd had enough). We have been to York many times but we not staying here again.

Unfortunately we were told to send an email to the manager with these points which we did, and haven't heard back, so here is our review: We booked into one of the basement rooms. Firstly, we loved the look of the hotel and the staff were very polite and professional but we were however, very underwhelmed and disappointed with the room we stayed in due to the black mould found in the room and also the noise disturbance for most of the late night into the early morning (the hotel is attached to a bar). I have since seen on various reviews that guests were advised beforehand that the room may be noisy, which we weren't. We also were not offered ear buds because of the noise which it seems others were when we rang reception very early morning to say we were struggling to sleep. The staff seemed surprised when we checked out when we informed them of the mould in the room, so I have attached pictures. We obviously expected a level of damp/smell due to the position of the room, however it was very overwhelming and when we returned after our meal and got ready to sleep we quickly could see all of the mould around the room, mainly in the toilet and shower area, but it also ran along the bottom of the walls. Another point to mention that wasn't huge, but we asked at reception when we checked in for a bar of soap for the toilet to be told they had none? So we had to go and buy some hand soap for the room to be able to wash our hands after using the loo which again, isn't very luxury- the soap dish was just left empty. The member of staff that checked us in also removed some cleaning spray that was left in our room when she let us in. It was our night away from home and our 2 young children so as you can imagine, we were looking forward to a lovely stay after travelling 2 hours from Burnley. We could have put up with the noise as it did seem to settle at around 3am but sleeping in a mouldy room is just a step too far. We totally understand that everyone has their own tastes and you can't please everyone but black mould is dangerous and needs to be addressed. We would have been happy to move to another room but unfortunately none were available for us to move into when we called early morning after trying to get some sleep. With the complete lack of response or acknowledgement from the manager I would recommend avoiding this hotel.

Perfect from the moment we walked in. Had the most amazing smell throughout. Easy check in and even got to choose a handmade soap. Room was beautiful and cool given the heat in York on the day. They went the extra mile and left us a couple of chocolates and a note congratulating us on our engagement. A little call in the morning and got complimentary pastries and fresh milk for tea. Bathroom on the small side but didn’t affect our stay. Will definitely stay again when In York

Was impressed by the photos online before I booked the room. This hotel didn’t disappoint. Greeted on entry and taken upstairs to the reception. Everywhere was dark and I remember saying how the place had a nice smell about it. Checked in and taken to our room in the basement. Very modern and inviting. If you like your privacy in the bathroom this isn’t the room for you. Had a good nights sleep and would stay here again. Excellent location to walk around York.

I booked this hotel for my partners birthday, and she absolutely loved it. The room we booked was the sir Joseph terry room. It was amazingly decorated, and the outdoor area of our room was peaceful and cosy. The hot tub was an amazing addition. The staff were incredible and very helpful. A quick call in the morning, and they brought warm fresh pastries to us. They also sent an email prior to our date of arrival, giving us a number of additions they provide to make our stay even better. Upon checking out, they allowed us to store our luggage at the site so we didn't have to carry it around all day. I can't express how amazed I was by this place and its staff.

We stayed at the impossible hotel york this weekend in the sir joseph terry room. The room was so small it was next to impossible to manoeuvre around the bed. Terrace ans hot tub we’re beautiful but we had an early departure so trying to pack beside my bed in a room (that looks cool and moody) but its dark as hell was so frustrating Other notes: we didn’t receive an email prior to check in. When we arrived we had no access to the hotel. We had to ask someone in their restaurant for help. We were met with massive stair cases and zero help bringing our bags to the room. After a frustrating entrance & a labouring journey up the stairs with our own luggage we were met with a lady who insisted on us picking out pur own home made soap…. It is decent idea if i wasn’t exhausted but i didnt really need to know my hands are going to smell like “britney spears curiosity” Small issues like no bar fridge ,random kettle on my bedside and a refillable water bottle felt cheap Positives were the hot tub, robe and comfortable bed Regardless, the place is cute just needs to woek out some kinks and i found it over priced for the value

Loved this hotel ! Super quirky and right in the middle of everywhere Parking was a nightmare but York is overall so not hotels fault We was in the basement rooms which yes smelt a bit damp but it’s in the basement so expected it , comfy bed and amazing bath with the free smelly as you check in . We was promised a phone call when our room was ready which we didn’t get but it’s ok In the morning we did hear some ‘activity’s ‘ going off around us and soon found out the walls were very thin but didn’t affect our stay Highly recommended and impressed The secret door to the bar next door was impressive too

Just spent the night in the dungeon room with my boyfriend, yes as some other reviews mention it was quite noisy but we just didnt care. I loved my stay here and the staff are faultless. I get excited over the little things like sampling hand soap to choose one for our room and coffee and pastries being delivered in the morning. The open bathroom just gave us a good laugh and definitely didn't put us off coming back. We will 100% be staying here again to experience more quirky rooms.

The staff were welcoming from the moment we arrived at the hotel. Very quirky hotel, on arrival we got to choose a whipped soap of our choice to use in the room. we stayed at the dungeon down in the basement. The email from the hotel after booking suggested that the room could be cold which got me worried. when we arrived they had Aircon and heater in the room which was great. We were also warned about that it could be noisy. we stayed on bank holiday weekend and didn't hear a sound. The bed was comfortable and in the morning we had complementary croissant, tea and coffee. although there is tea and coffee in the room already, along with filtered water. I highly recommend this hotel
