The hotel is in a good location, just in the small town on Devon Lake. The room standard is 16 square meters, but it feels like it should be more than 20 square meters. Clean and hygienic. The service attitude is good, we arrived early, and the front desk gave the room without saying a word. The restaurant in the hotel is also very good and the dishes are delicious. Some local elderly people say that they have been eating in the restaurant for more than 20 years.
The location was stunning, so quiet and tranquil. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The accommodation was excellent & the food was fantastic. The chef had prepared a special menu for the 2 vegetarian and gluten free guests in our party which was delicious. The red roses for the ladies in our party on Valentines Day was a lovely touch and the live harpist made the evening feel special. We have highly recommend this hotel to all our friends and family & have no hesitation in recommending Borrowdale Gates Hotel to anyone reading this review. We are looking forward to our next stay already!

We stayed at Armathwaite Hall over the Valentine's weekend to celebrate our last weekend away just the two of us before our baby boy arrives. At 35 weeks pregnant, I was in desperate need of relaxation and pampering and that was exactly what I got at Armathwaite! We booked the 'bubbles and bliss package' and we upgraded by booking a lake view room which was worth paying extra for. I particularly enjoyed my meal in the Lake View Restaurant on the first night, the staff in there are lovely and professional, and clearly work very hard with the same staff being on duty at breakfast too. Special shout out to Elena (apologies if I have got her name wrong) who is an absolute credit to the hotel and looked after us so well. Nothing was too much trouble for her! The pool and spa facilities are wonderful, and I'm looking forward to coming back when I'm not pregnant so I can enjoy the jacuzzi/sauna. Top tip for mums to be - the pregnancy massage in the spa is top quality, and the non-alcoholic sparkling wine available in the bar is probably one of the nicest ones I've tried!
We ere on a hiking trip and due to the weather had to make a diversion to Keswick for an overnight stop. We made the reservation via one of the many platforms available in this digital age. We arrived in our full wet weather gear and the first question was “you need to pay £6 to pay in my carpark”, we all looked at each other and then back at the receptionist and asked “does it look like we’ve arrived by car?”. We then got a lot of moaning about how bad the digital platforms are and some obscenities about them being fatherless. The rooms we were allocated were very dated and one was just inappropriate. When we asked to change that room it was a price increase immediately! But it was a portion a storm!
We started and fin our linier hike from here,we had 2 4 bed rooms and ours had a balcony overlooking the river, check in was quick and easy and we all got settled in the rooms before having a beer in the bar/dining area, The rooms are comfortable with enough space for kit and the beds although bunk beds are well made and sturdy, Our room had a toilet and shower with a sink in the sleeping area, oneroblem we had was the toilet never filled properly and this was reported to reception, The hostel is popular and when we were there a group of 50 students were also there but the staff were great at serving either beers or breakfast in the morning. It's a great place to head out from with its excellent location and we will deffo stay here again

What a lovely place. We received the friendliest welcome that I think we have ever had from anywhere we have stayed. Lovely and clean, all very newly renovated to a high standard. The seating areas are very cosy and a welcome glass of mulled wine was offered. The rooms are immaculate, very nicely decorated. Lovely walk in shower. Breakfast again was lovely, Very friendly ladies serving and all cooked fresh to order. There is plenty of free parking allocated and literally across the road to the town and lake. I can’t rate this place high enough, we will 100% return for a weekend away.

GGuest UserThe environment and facilities of the B&B itself are very good, and it is a very atmospheric accommodation. The biscuits in the room were delicious, and the meals provided by the B&B were also good, but not cost-effective (some dishes were a bit salty). The location is relatively remote, and I feel that people who stay here generally drive their own cars. We are a bit far away from Keswick and Derwentwater, and if the bus stops, we can only call to book a taxi. However, the overall accommodation experience is still very good!
Very pleasant short 2-night stay over the New Year. Booked this guest house based on the reviews on here. We had a bit of spare time before checking in so knocked on the door to ask about parking. We were given our keys early and advice about parking, as it happens, we parked right outside in the street for free parking. The room was a good size for what we needed, which was only somewhere to kip as we knew we would be out walking all day. The big high bed was super comfy, Wi-Fi in the room was very strong at no extra charge, usual tea/coffee facilities provided with a bottle of water and biscuits. On the side in the room was a breakfast menu which required populating for the next morning's order. There was a good choice from your full English to simple food like egg on toast. We both opted for the full English. Breakfast time and the food was excellent, the produce was top quality and all cooked to my liking, bacon slightly crispy, it arrived piping hot with a good pot of coffee. I don't normal have two breakfasts on the trot, but I ordered the same again for the next day and again it was excellent. Would definitely return, and we plan to.
Very nice would highly recommend breakfast was 5 🌟 comfortable room and bed very quiet will definitely go back . Street parking but we had no problem finding a space ,Only tip I can give you is to book somewhere to eat on your first night as all the pubs where booked up and we ended up having a pizza from a takeaway .
GGuest UserAfter entering with some in trepidation I was pleasantly greeted by a professional friendly gentleman who took my order and booking for dinner that night. I found a lovely corner to pitch up and settle down to enjoy my pint. Some times when you just try you are rewarded. And this is one such time. Feel very comfortable in the friendly, bright, clean and well run establishment. Fully recommend a visit. And if you can stay in the hotel or camp site next door then so much the better 👍🎊👍 Foods good too 😋
Just returned home after a 6 hour journey from hell but yet again another great stay at the Lodge in the Vale. Have been coming to the Lodge for 3 years roughly now and the hospitality as per usual was top class. Perfect location for whatever your reasoning is for visiting the Lakes, whether its to climb the hills, explore the Lakes and all its beautiful surroundings or like myself, a avid plane spotter wanting to climb the hills for the low flying aircraft (when the weather allows). Rooms are consistently clean and tidy, nothing is ever too much to ask for if you need anything extra or more off if you stay for 4/5 nights etc, you get offered a mini room service half way through your stay if you require anything doing (new towels/etc). Not a breakfast eating person but always get lunch in the cafe after a morning out & about and the food is always spot on, whether you have a lovely warm soup or a toasted Panini! Already looking forward to my next trip and to seeing the brilliant team at both the Lodge in the Vale and the sister pub just down the road The Kings Head (30 seconds in the car or 10 min walk away) where Peter & his team always look after you if you’re staying with the Lodge! 5 stars isn’t enough for these guys!
GGuest UserTraditional Lake District hotel. Location was perfect for wandering around Keswick.
My room was warm and had a lovely view of snow capped hills. Tea and coffee making facilities were available.
Bed was very comfortable and facilities in the room were clean.
Decor in the hotel is traditional country style.
Check in was quick, a few stairs to climb to my room.
The lady who served breakfast was very cheerful and friendly, despite us arriving very close to service closing. An excellent breakfast was served.
The car park is small but managed to park my car and was allowed to leave it there for a few hours after check out so I could explore Keswick.
A comfortable one night stay. Thank you.
SSnapyhappyThis is a place to stay if you want a great location and to stay in a house that has character, it was built as country retreat and its obvious why they picked the location. The greeting was warm, helpful and efficient The room was big enough but compact by modern standards, bathroom was modern and clean, extra bedding was available if required. The bed was comfortable and the area is, not surprisingly very quiet. There isn't a lift so pack light! Breakfast was good, full English available and served in a pleasant dinning room by competent staff. The bar was open during our stay but we chose the 10 minuet stroll down the driveway to the pub for dinner as it was a nice evening, walkers could probably do it in 5. We only stayed a night but I would be happy to stay longer, if you want a modern hotel this isn't the place for you, if you want charm and a sense of history it is.
