"This is our second stay at this fort-hotel. The first time, we arrived late and left early, without being able to explore the town and its surroundings. Although it has a lovely swimming pool, the fort is showing its age. The exterior section on the other side of the main courtyard is even in poor condition. In the courtyard, the late owner, Dr. Raisal Singh Khandela, established a day hospital that provides free consultations to those in need. The rooms are very pleasant, spacious, very clean, and simply but tastefully decorated. They have air conditioning and a fan. A kettle, coffee and tea, and bottled mineral water are provided. The late owner of the fort and his descendants of royal lineage are keen to maintain a museum-like atmosphere in their establishment. Hence the presence of numerous objects recalling not-so-distant traditions. The bathrooms are functional and clean, and the linens are clean and soft. There is a small sitting area, a work table, and a terrace under the arcades. The dining room is very large. The meals are delicious: in addition to traditional dishes like rice, vegetable curry, and dahl, we discover lauki kofta and chatpate baingan—crispy eggplant, a real treat. Breakfasts are succulent: fresh fruit, fruit juice, toast, jam, masala omelet, pancakes, tea or coffee. We loved the aloo kofta. Vinod takes us to visit the city. We were far from expecting to encounter so many Muslims. Practically all the shops are run by Muslims. Only the vegetable and fruit vendors are Hindu. As in Ajmer, for a few moments we feel as if we are in Pakistan. In the evening, we meet Girdhar Pratap Khandela, son of the royal family that has ruled the region since ancient times. He suggests a tour for the next day, namely the Banjara community that lives in a nearby village. He also proposes visiting his family's cenotaphs and the palace farm. Surendra accompanies us on our visit to the Banjaras. We have an exceptional morning with a large family headed by the patriarch, Vimor Manjouram. Although poor, the women are covered in gold and silver jewelry. One of them even puts on her festive attire so we can experience this tradition. Sublime. In the afternoon, Vinod takes us to visit a woodturner who makes, among other things, the small rollers for making chapatis. He also turns beautiful wooden platters. Then he takes us to the edge of town to visit the chhatris of the royal family, monuments built to commemorate the deceased. We finish at the farm that supplies the fort and the family, with its old well (baori). Vinod treats us to an unexpected aperitif: fruit juice and Bikaji snacks. Khandela Castle is 35 km from Lohargarh and its Sun Temple (Surya Temple). A visit not to be missed. A very lively place. The magnificent Shree Rani Satiji Mandir of Jhunjhun"
