We spent 3 nights at Gaya Island Resort and had a great time, I thought I would write a review because there are a few things worth considering before you go. Firstly, the place itself is amazing, the staff are super friendly and caring - probably the most professional I have ever experienced in my many years of travelling. So all in all it was a wonderful stay. The things worth noting are as follows: 1. The sunbeds, I think may have mentioned it and it's worth mentioning again - there are nowhere near enough. When you pay and arm and a leg to stay at a beautiful resort it is annoying that they haven't found a way to add more sunbeds. People get there early, throw on their towels and stay or disappear and the seat is gone for the day. This is a solvable issue and the resort should so something about it. 2. Check in is after 3 - could be later - and it's not flexible, so if you are arriving earlier be prepared to sit around waiting for your room. It would be nice if they could flex a little as waiting hours for a room without your bags is not a joy, but it is what it is. 3. Eating - you are on the resort, so you are eating in one of their restaurants - no other options available. There are a few restaurants so not really a problem (we did the hot pot restaurant and it was great), but good to be aware. By far the most expensive places we ate in Malaysia, but I guess given the quality of the resort it wasn't a surprise and the main restaurant is reasonable enough. 4. Activities - my wife and daughter did the cooking class and loved it, we did the night walk - which was fun and me and my son did the coral garden. The Coral garden was fun and I was lucky to see a big old shark. However there is a large amount of plastic floating on the surface of the water that is quite concerning and makes the whole place not feel so clean. The corals and fish look healthy so may be fine, but be prepared to swim through bottles and crisp bags to see the fish. The local resorts and local authorities should really work together to resolve and you pay the tourist tax, so not sure where that's going, but not to plastic clearance by the look of it. Hope that's helpful. all in all, it's a beautiful place to stay, could just do with a tweak here and there to make it even better

The only hotel in DesignHotelsTM group in Borneo island! The lobby and room design, coffee, cocktail and food quality is probably the best you'll find in Sabah and its at par with Singapore standards. The hotel doesn't just give you the environment of a design hotel, great coffee, bespoke cocktails, delicious food but it also offers true Sabahian hospitality that you will not experience anywhere else. As soon as I arrived, one of the hotel owners personally came and greeted me and spend his time to give me a tour and explain the concept of the hotel and its design. The design of the hotel is influenced by different Sabahian landscapes and local craftsmanship depicted through contemporary means. Materials and craft is all sourced locally. I had the chance to meet both the owners and their hospitality was unprecedented. They took their time to get to know me and introduce Sabah and its culture. Something that you will not experience at big chain hotels. The LUMA is a brand new hotel group. There will always be room for improvement in their services. The willingness to improve is there and they listen if you have any complaints or needs.

I booked a Club room with Club Lounge facilities as I wanted to rest after a gectic 2 days' wirk. The room had a FULL SEAVIEW on the 8th floor. It was wonderful to view the sunset, changing clouds, islands n boats in the distance. To my delight a huge number of egrets flew in to their homes on the tops of the 2 raintrees just below my window. Sadly they were off to forage for fishes by early dawn. Great spread of food n beverages esp at dusk. Staff too very friendly n helpful. Will return

The hotel location is excellent. Near weekend night market and Sunday morning market at Gaya street. Also within walking distance from popular seafood restaurants such as Welcome Seafood and kk garden seafood. The swimming pool is 1.4m deep with a kids pool which caters to families with young kids. The buffet spread has good variety of food. The staff are friendly. The only small feedback is that the aircon temperature is too cold which I think it is centrally controlled.

The service is great. The room is clean and well-equipped. The only difference is that the hot water is not too hot. Everything else is fine. I stayed here for two days and I am very satisfied. I will definitely choose this hotel next time.

The staff is very nice & efficient. We noted it’s a smoking room after check-in, and the staff arranged another non-smoking room for us as requested upon booking. The swimming pool locates on the rooftop, with a rooftop bar & restaurant. Located near the city center, close to lots of local food & restaurants.

Great and excellent staycation. The view of the resort is the best. The room is clean and the staff all friendly and helpful. Only the pool floor is slippery, near to kids pool. The big swimming pool not so clean because of the dry leaves and sand from the beach i guess. The food taste is flat and the menu is same for 2 days. But the pastries fresh and nice.

The room I will give 8/10 too old. The view from my room can't focus to sunset because too many trees, I think they forgot to trimmed but, it's okey. A bit disappointed about the food. the dinner in cafe bole. I ordered for lamb steak 80myr but very hard to chew 5/10 and the blackpepper sauce tasteless 5/10. The nasi goreng kampung too many sugar added haven't finished my dinner. The breakfast time, i cannot finished my dessert, my nasi goreng and the fried noodles. Overall for breakfast I give 7/10. Otherwise the staff very helpful and respectful.

Pros: - The room is spacious.. - A ceiling fan is a plus ❤️! - The breakfast is worth the price.. - Staff is friendly Cons: - Outdated bathroom with no bidet! - Lighting too minimal in the room - Iron upon request - Amenities not much - The changing room and locker for the sauna is in a bad condition

I recently stayed at and had a pleasant experience overall. The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. The staff quickly and efficiently helped me change to a new room without any hassle because the earlier room assigned was at a low floor. I haven't used the initial room except to drop my luggages in it! The room was great! The bed was very comfortable, which made for a good night's sleep, and the view of the sea was absolutely stunning. There's a little walk-in wardrobe with dresser. I really enjoyed my stay and appreciated the excellent service provided by the hotel staff. There is a massage shop behind the hotel. Take a footpath between the hotel and the residential building. The massage parlor at level 1 has an attitude and seems sleezy, so use the one level 2.
