"The room was very clean and comfortable, but be aware that our room's window didn't offer any view and couldn't be opened for ventilation. It was fine for a one-night stay, and the facilities were quite new with unique decor. The breakfast restaurant also had a great ambiance."

"Good hostel. Reasonable price and well equipped facilities. I would stay here if I come Oamaru again. One bad thing. There is no front desk. So guests always have to be aware of PIN that lets you get inside (even their room). So I had to bring my mobile even when I went to the toilet. If I had forgotten my room PIN, I couldn't open the door of my room."

"I thought it might have been our imagination, but after reading two similar reviews from guests who stayed during the same time we did (Nov. & Jan., 2025 - 26), I think it wasn't just us. My friend and I also felt initially that we were imposing on our hosts, rather than feeling welcomed, but we persevered, and one of "the Jameses" at least finally warmed up a bit. I think it was our request to meet their dogs that did it. The place is gorgeous and impeccably maintained. The delicious (vegetarian - we had requested in advance) dinner was a bit awkward, with only the 2 of us and the unsmiling chef (the other James), but breakfast was very impressive and more friendly, with several other guests to talk with. A good lesson in tolerance for different types of personalities."

"We originally wanted to book a 2-night stay in Oamaru, but we were only able to get one night at this place and we’re so glad we did! The host was warm, approachable, and had a great sense of humor, which made our stay even more enjoyable. The accommodation was lovely, comfortable, and had everything we needed. We truly enjoyed our time here and would definitely come back again. If I had to mention one small downside, it would be the limited hot water. We were staying as a bigger group, and my brother ended up taking a cold shower in the middle of winter! 😂 So it might be a little inconvenient if several people need to shower one after another. Overall, it was a wonderful stay, and we highly recommend this place!"

"I'd give five stars for the location, ambiance, cleanliness, and service. The hotel lobby has a cool steampunk vibe, and each room has its own unique theme. It's super close to all the main attractions, and having a Woolworths right next to the parking lot makes shopping really convenient. The only downside is that breakfast is a bit simple, but the fruit is really fresh. I'd definitely choose to stay here again if I get the chance!"

"Casa Nova is a luxurious, beautiful, and comfortable B&B. The hosts carefully restored the building with incredible attention to detail. The bedroom felt luxurious with very comfortable, high-quality bedding, and a small balcony with a view over the grounds and across Oamaru with the ocean in the distance. I especially loved the high-pressure shower. The hosts, Brenda and Katrina, excel in hosting, as well, making us feel very welcome during our two-night stay and sharing many tips with us for our two days in Oamaru (like many tourists, we were there mainly to see the little blue penguins, and we also got lucky in sighting yellow-eyed penguins at Bushy Beach). With only three guest rooms, the hosts attend to carefully to everyone, and the delicious hot breakfast is fully customized based on each guest's preference. Casa Nova is a lovely accommodation and was a highlight of our trip around the South Island of New Zealand. We highly recommend staying here when in Oamaru."

"We were blown away by this wonderful Art Nouveau house built in the 1880s and only ever owned by 4 owners. It has wonderful furniture much of it bought by the original owner and added to by the subsequent ones. It is like staying in a private house, not least because the hosts/owners, James and James, greet you personally and are present throughout your stay. One James does the cooking and the other the gardening, producing all the fruit and vegetables. You dine with the other guests as you would in private house. James’s cooking is excellent. Again breakfast is with the other guests with wonderful homemade jams and eggs any way you like. All in all a great visit."
