St. James Hotel Selma, Tapestry Collection by Hilton

St. James Hotel Selma, Tapestry Collection by Hilton

Selma|0.33km from city center
This Hilton-affiliated historic 2-story hotel is located right on the Alabama River. It does show its age, and some services are not what you would expect from a Hilton property. But I can't imagine that you would want to stay anywhere else in Selma. There has been a hotel here since 1833. The rooms facing the river have a verandah with great views, and the French-style architecture and lovely interior courtyard are reminiscent of New Orleans. Selma is downtrodden, and recently had major tornado damage (still in the cleanup stage). But there's lots of civil rights and other historic sites within walking distance of the hotel. For example, the hotel is only a block from the famous Pettus bridge. History is a big drawing point here. Our modern riverfront king room was fine--nothing fancy and just a standard bathroom, but comfortable and quiet. It had a large flat screen TV. There was some wall damage and the bathroom shower curtain did have some dirt spots. The hotel does have a fitness room. Plentiful free street parking is right in front of the hotel. One issue here is food service. The small restaurant/bar has only a skimpy bar food menu, and the do-it-yourself offerings on the free continental breakfast are subpar (like you would find in a one star hotel). For fine dining, I would recommend Tally Ho on the north side of Selma. Despite some of the service issues, we were glad that we stayed here---the history, location, and river views made for a good stay.
