"Our 3-night stay in this beautiful hotel began with a charming welcome and ended like a nightmare. We booked two rooms, called Angels and Flowers. Since our 5-year-old son prefers to sleep in our bed when traveling, we decided to stay just in Angels. The hostess, Ms. Teresa, gave us a short tour of the property, showed us a secret chapel, and shared the family history. We were so impressed by her kindness and the historic grandeur of the house that we overlooked the warning signs — such as the strange smell in the rooms. The first night we slept badly, but we couldn’t figure out why. After the second night, I noticed red spots on my son’s body. I immediately told Teresa, and she said she would send somebody to check our room. The third night was unbearable. Around 3:40 a.m., I realized I couldn’t sleep anymore because my son was tossing and turning constantly. It was obvious that something was biting him badly. We moved to the Flowers room, and there I finally saw it — a small bug crawling on my pillow. From that moment, sleep was impossible. I turned on the nightstand light and used my phone flashlight to keep watch over my son. There were dozens and dozens of them. My child finally managed to sleep, but only because his mother stayed awake all night fighting to protect him. Whenever I paused — even for a moment to read about bedbugs online — more of them immediately attacked my son. The bed turned into a battlefield, every centimeter covered with smashed bugs and our blood. It was awful, humiliating, and heartbreaking. What had felt like a fairytale, staying in a historic family home, turned into a horrific bedbug-infested nightmare. My son was badly bitten, and part of our vacation was ruined by sleepless nights and terrible memories. This was certainly not what we paid for. At 8:00 a.m., I woke my husband so we could leave as quickly as possible. Despite being exhausted and disoriented, I wanted to speak to Ms. Teresa. I showed her photos from that night and explained everything. Her maid, present during the conversation, said she needed to check the rooms. Teresa translated my words to her and, in the end, only said: “Ok, we were not aware of that.” No apology. No excuses. Nothing. I still cannot believe that was her response. We left immediately. And one last note: I am convinced they already knew about the bedbugs. There were far too many, and the smell was obvious. Anyone responsible for cleaning the rooms could not possibly miss the signs. Two days later the bites are still itching, and we keep scratching — especially the child. I tried to count the bites on his body, but when I reached at least 16 just on one hand, I gave up. I can only pray we don’t bring the infestation home. We are trying to forget this nightmare, and I strongly urge you: do not stay at Quinta de São Thiago at any price."
