The whole hotel system seems to be created with foreigners in mind. I stayed for 2 nights, while my family stayed for 3 nights. I originally booked the 2 nights through Trip.com. When I wanted to add an extra day, I was informed it was better to book it again online. At that time, I was in Nepal for 3 days and my phone was being repaired in Hong Kong, so I didn’t have access to my usual email or digital wallet. I had Nepali cash, but the payment system wouldn’t allow it, and I was denied the option to add more nights directly at the front desk. I tried booking again using my temporary phone, but the credit/card wouldn’t allow it—possibly because the phone and location were new and my digital wallet couldn’t be used. The only solution was asking a friend to book the additional night for me. This experience made me feel that the system is not friendly to Nepali guests and that they may strongly prefer online foreign-currency-style payment methods rather than Nepali rupees. I also tried to get the Nepali rate. It was around NPR 12,000–15,000, while the online rate was significantly cheaper. Based on the current currency conversion, the price difference felt like it could be about 3,000–5,000 rupees less online. This also made me feel they may not truly support Nepali pricing equally. The front desk staff were sometimes helpful, but they often didn’t seem genuine. Some staff seemed reluctant and not truly welcoming or happy to assist. In contrast, the only people who felt consistently happy to see me amd my family were the housekeeping staff and the guards. About the room it’s a bit small. I took a long warm shower, and after a while the water started leaking toward the bedroom corridor. However, there were also positives—despite being in Kathmandu, the tap had good water flow and the water color looked clear, not yellowish (and not as low-flow). Overall, the stay didn’t feel welcoming to me or my family. I’m not sure if this is because the system is designed not to cater well to Nepali guests, or simply because the staff attitude was “blah.” Would I stay again? It feels like 50–50. My honest advice is: if you’re not Nepali, you will love it. But if you are Nepali and want to feel genuinely welcomed, you should think carefully—because you could spend the same amount or much more less at a family-owned business and likely feel much more respected and welcomed.

This is a newly built hotel, and it's rare to find such clean bathrooms in Nepal. It's located in a quiet spot at the entrance of Thamel, right next to the Garden of Dreams. While it's a bit far from central areas like Durbar Square, it's a great place to stay if you're looking for peace and quiet at the hotel. Since it seems brand new, the room was exceptionally clean. The bathroom was also spotless, so I felt very comfortable using it. The breakfast area on the 8th floor offered a lovely view. The front desk staff were polite, but during breakfast, I noticed other guests were asked for their egg orders, whereas I wasn't (perhaps because I had already taken scrambled eggs). Also, coffee (other than instant) at breakfast was an extra charge.

I had a wonderful experience staying at Funky Monkey Hotel Hostel and Apartment in Thamel, Kathmandu. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed and comfortable. The location is absolutely fantastic—right in the heart of Thamel, with restaurants, cafés, shops, bars, nightlife, and everything you need just a short walk away. At the same time, the property itself has a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere, which made it a great place to come back to after exploring Kathmandu. The room was clean, comfortable, and well maintained. The bed was comfortable, the room had good Wi-Fi and air conditioning, and having a private bathroom was very convenient. Everything was arranged in a simple but practical way, making the room feel like a good place to relax after a busy day of sightseeing. What really made my stay special was the staff and hospitality. Everyone was friendly, polite, welcoming, and always ready to help whenever I needed something. They greeted me with a smile and made me feel more like a welcomed guest than just another customer. Their helpful attitude and warm Nepali hospitality made a big difference to my overall experience. I also really enjoyed the rooftop area. It is a great place to sit, relax, have a drink, meet other travelers, and enjoy the lively atmosphere of Thamel. If you are traveling alone, with friends, or as a couple, I think the rooftop is one of the nicest places to spend some time in the evening. Another thing I appreciated was the overall value for money. You get a great location, comfortable accommodation, helpful staff, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and a welcoming atmosphere without paying luxury-hotel prices. For travelers who want to explore Kathmandu and stay somewhere convenient, comfortable, and social, this is a very good choice. I would definitely recommend Funky Monkey Hotel Hostel and Apartment to anyone visiting Kathmandu, especially backpackers, couples, solo travelers, families, and people looking for a convenient place to stay in Thamel. The combination of location, comfort, friendly staff, and good value makes this property stand out. Thank you to the entire Funky Monkey team for making my stay so enjoyable. The hotel is 1 km from the bus stop. After booking, I received two emails. One of them provided some important information. I had a phone number, so I called the hotel to pick me up after I got off the bus. Within three minutes, they arrived on a motorcycle. The room was okay—not too picky at this price point in rural Nepal. The hot water was good, and shampoo, towels, soap, and toothbrushes were all provided. You had to ask the owner for a hairdryer and hot water. The service was friendly and welcoming. Overall, it was good. However, the hotel is 1 km from the main street, which can be inconvenient for dining out. Be aware of this when booking. Also, the cheaper rooms don't have air conditioning, but they charged me an extra 40 RMB to get one with air conditioning.

Location is amazing in Thamel, super easy to walk around for food and many things Staff at front desk was very friendly and helpful And there is a cocktail coupon every day Only breakfast was too late because my schedule to leave at 9 am but it was ready at 8.30 am and two days in a row. Overall it is very nice hotel to stay when you go to Kathmandu

Good hotel. They offer airport transfers, but you need to exit the building first and then call the greeter. There was a strange incident during breakfast when a hotel employee entered my room without permission. I hope this doesn't happen again.

Awesome! Very very satisfied with our stay at Pomelo. There’s location is great, we are just a few minutes walk from Thamel, 20 minutes walk from Sayambhu, 10 minutes taxi from Balaju… Now the service, it was the best part in the inn, the staff is really very friendly and accommodating, thank you Gyanu and Kamal who helped us for everything during our stay. We booked two rooms as a family, but we got one big family room with separated rooms, the beds were very comfortable and the bathroom was big and proper to use. The breakfast is the best one we had in Kathmandu, fresh and simple. There is a rooftop, from where we took a bowl of air in the evenings and mornings, really nice.

I had a very enjoyable stay at this hotel during my visit to Kathmandu. The property is beautiful and full of character, making it an excellent choice for travelers who appreciate traditional Nepali architecture and culture. The hotel has done a wonderful job preserving its heritage charm, creating a peaceful and authentic atmosphere that feels very different from a typical modern hotel. As an eco-friendly property, the hotel does not provide air conditioning or a refrigerator in the rooms. However, I did not find this to be an issue at all, as the weather was pleasant and comfortable throughout my stay. The staff were outstanding. Everyone was warm, friendly, and genuinely helpful, always greeting guests with a smile and making me feel welcome from check-in to check-out. Breakfast was simple and fairly standard, without a huge variety of choices, but everything was fresh and enjoyable. The yogurt, in particular, was excellent and definitely worth trying. There was only one minor issue in my room: the ceiling fan seemed to run at the same speed regardless of the setting, so even the lowest level felt quite strong. I never mentioned it to the front desk because it was not a major inconvenience. The biggest area for improvement would be the Wi-Fi connection. Unfortunately, the signal was quite weak and unreliable, especially for anyone who needs a stable internet connection for work or communication. Despite that, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The beautiful traditional design, eco-conscious concept, relaxing atmosphere, and exceptional hospitality more than made up for the small inconveniences. I stayed for 2 nights, it didn't feel safe for me as a solo woman traveller. One the first night around 11pm there were 3-4 men shouting and laughing and knocked my door. I was scared and called the reception. The phone wire was not connected to the phone, i have to hold it tight to the phone while i was speaking. It was a terrifying experience. When in emergency even the phone wasn't working! the receptionist took 30 min to for the men to calm down. The next day morning the receptionist told me they men moved out. But i saw them in the evening in the hotel. Didn't feel safe. Again, the men, shouting and aloud. Still i couldn't sleep there, awake whole two nights i stayed there, didn't feel safe. The place was clean. Location was good.

The hotel location is excellent, fantastic breakfast,staff cooperation everywhere was excellent. This hotel is not a four star hotel according to the Nepal hospitality...it clearly shows it's a three star hotel and all the facilities are related to three star or below. The rooms are small,if staying with a couple or with a girlfriend is fine but if it's staying with two individuals it is very difficult moving and keeping the baggage, and other things. The windows are fixed and can't open. I will say again that the staff were fantastic.
